Education: A Great Cause To Support
Written by: Jean-Baptiste Mesidor

Union
School is known as a prestigious American institution
established in Haiti since 1919. By its constitution,
its by-laws, and an adapted curriculum, the school
commissions itself to promote an
American-based-education coupled with the Haitian
culture. This goal creates a pretty heavy educational
load. As a matter of fact, throughout the years, the
school fought forcefully against many odds to stay the
course. It is still fighting despite some significant
and durable successes.
How can you help?
Did
you graduate from, or simply, did you attend classes at
Union School? Are you parents of students at Union
School? Or, in general, are you a supporter of a solid
education package for all? If so, then there are many
ways in which you can help.
|
01. The school is
still paying big on a mortgage for its new
campus which was graciously
financed by a local bank. Some of you are
finance experts, or are well connected in
the finance world to help the school
identify ways and means by which this
financial burden can become a lesser
handicap for its overall operations.

02.
Our import – hire teachers are housed in
rented homes or apartments. In recent years,
that drains hundreds of thousands of US
dollars from the school account. To solve
this problem, and save some money now badly
needed to keep the school mortgage payment
current, the school is planning to build a
special housing project whose cost is
estimated to be near below half a million US
dollars.

(The vacant land seen here at right, is part
of the school estates and set aside for that
construction project). Needless to say there
are many ways to help in that regard.

The South-wing of the campus, earmarked to
house part of the elementary student body,
is yet to be completed – as shown here at
right. |

04.The
buildings that make up our campus, for the
most part, are yet to be painted. The
pictures seen here at right and below, show
a sample of what needs to be done in that
regard. |

buildings are also to be painted. |

05. We do have a
computer lab and a working science lab. But,
in terms of equipment, there is
definitely a need to upgrade. Each
classroom was expected to have a number of
working
computers based on the needs of that
particular classroom. Some classrooms do not
have
any. |
 |
Note:
We leave it up to your judgment and
possibilities to determine which one of the
aforementioned problems you
can help solve.
How to
channel the help – if any.
Any of the following entities
can be used to forward your help to the
school:
01.
Through the administration
02.
Via Union School Alumni
Association (USAA)
03.
Via
Teachers-Parents-Association (PTA)
04.
Via the finance office
05.
Through the tech department
