1- A Brief on Our Long History
Our institution was originally established in 1919 as the Colony
School for the purpose of educating the students of the U.S. Marine
Corps families stationed in Haiti. It continued for several years as
a small school serving only a few families of U.S. citizens.
In 1943, the school constitution was amended to permit qualified
students of any nation to enter, and at that time the name was
changed to Union School. Recently, the student body counted as many
as seventeen different nationalities.
Part of the downtown Port-au-Prince site of the school was donated
by the Haitian government and the main building was completed in
1953. An auditorium/classrom complex was added in 1962. A library
was built in 1969. Then in 1974, the elementary school (grades 1-6)
was moved into a new facility directly in front of the original
building. In 1978, the administration offices were relocated and
remodeled to provide for more efficient management of the school.
In the fall of 1987, the school moved to a temporary location in the
Juvenat area of Petionville. And, in 2002, a new and modern campus
has been built in the same area to accommodate both students and
staff. When fully completed according to plans, the entire project
will cost between five and 6 millions US dollars.
This institution is seriously devoted to uphold a world class
educational program on behalf of its students - tomorrow citizens.
Some one says: "If you think education is too expensive, try
ignorance." We won't try, because we know better. We will continue
to invest - for our children. There is no other alternative.
2- Accreditation through SACS
Fully accredited by SACS (the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools) since 1962, Union School holds membership in the
Association of Colombian-Caribbean American Schools, the Association
of the Advancement of International Education, National Association
of Secondary School Principals and the Association for Supervision
and Curriculum Development, the Tri-Regional Association of American
Schools (Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and the Caribbean.
In the past, our school accreditation was renewed every ten years
based on the evaluation of expert educators appointed by the U.S.
Department of Education, and mandated to review the entire operation
system of the school. Our administration has generally been pleased
with that expert committee's commendations, and has always worked
hard to follow its recommendations as well. (The accreditation
process is now set up for every seven years.)
3- Our organization
The School is governed by a 7-member Board of Trustees. Elected
members serve a 3-year term. Terms are staggered so that 2 members
are elected each year. One member is appointed by the U.S. Embassy.
The Board is elected by the Union School General Assembly, the
sponsors of the school. The School is incorporated and tax-exempt in
the United States, and it is legally constitute as a “Public
Utility” under Haitian law.
4- Our Curriculum
The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic and college
preparatory public school. Instruction is in English with French
(grades 1-12) and Spanish (high school) taught as foreign languages.
Honors/Advanced section is offered at different grades in the
secondary school. Most graduates (97%) go on to colleges and
universities in the United States. Students actively participate in
community service project and organizations such as Presidential
Classroom's, Future World Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. and
volunteer in local Habitat for Humanity. In addition, qualified
students are inducted in the Quisqueya Chapter of the National Honor
Society. The Union School is accredited by the Southern Association
of Colleges and School in the United States. Through this
accreditation, students graduating from the school receive a U.S.
high school diploma. All are eligible to attend colleges and/or
universities internationally.
